We tend to make airports more stressful than they really are but there are still under-the-radar bad habits that transform flying into a nightmare even before the plane takes off. I have observed that the trips which are a jumble of chaos most of the time are not because of delays or crowds but rather because of tiny decisions made throughout the journey. The moment I let go of these practices, flying turned to be very tranquil, very even, and significantly less tiring. If you normally feel worn out after a day at the airport, these nine errors could be the reason why. Here are nine things a lot of us do that just amp up the stress.
Showing Up Way Too Early (or Cutting It Too Close)

While some people choose to arrive at the airport three hours in advance for a domestic flight and end up either pacing or sipping the overpriced coffee the whole time. Others come in just 45 minutes before the boarding and run through the security lines all sweaty. Just play it safe with 90 minutes for domestic and two hours for international flights and thus avoid the anxiety.
Overpacking the Carry-On

A carry-on that is so full that it can barely be closed. The fear of “what if I need it?” Nothing of it will go in the overhead compartment with the gate agents watching you like a hawk. Pack only what is necessary and you will be able to load it above your head without any effort; that is one less problem to deal with when already tired.
Ignoring the Airport App or Website Ahead of Time

Not checking gate changes, delays, or even parking status before leaving home. Suddenly you’re rushing or circling lots. A quick peek on the drive or have your partner check saves surprises and that knot in your stomach.
Standing Right at the Gate Waiting to Board

Blocking the access to your boarding area before your zone is called and occupying everyone’s space. Just stay in the comfortable seat until they really start, perform your leg stretching when needed. No need to be like a hawk watching its prey in a Black Friday sale.
Skipping Water and Healthy Snacks

Relying on airport food courts for greasy slices or nothing at all. Dehydration hits harder in the dry AC environment inside the airports, and low blood sugar makes everything irritating. Bring a refillable bottle (empty through security), nuts, or fruit to keeps mood and energy steady.
Wearing Complicated Shoes or Clothes for Security

Laced boots, belts with large belt buckles or jackets with pockets stuffed with things makes things complicated when doing security checks. Every time the line grows long while you are messing around. Slip-on sneakers, simple jewelry, empty pockets make check-ins easy and leave you calm.
Not Using Lounge Access If You Have It

Credit cards or memberships often includes a lounge access, but people don’t realize they have it due to lack of awareness. A quiet spot with decent seats, free coffee, and outlets makes waits bearable especially when flights delay and backs start aching.
Scrolling News or Work Emails the Whole Time

Constant doom-scrolling of news, and answering “quick” emails, before you get on an airplane will cause you undue anxiety before you even get on the plane. Put your phone on airplane mode early, and instead of answering e-mail messages, reading a book, or watching people as they pass, you can relax and enjoy the vacation that starts at the airport!
Forgetting to Move Around During Layovers

Sitting stiff for hours then wondering why hips and knees complain on the next flight. Walk the terminal, do light stretches by the window, find a quieter corner. Keeps blood flowing and makes arriving feel less like recovery.
